More Life, Less Late Night Texting

Have you ever wondered why you can not sleep at night?

It probably depends on the time you spend on your phone at night. If you notice that you are up late just to use your phone, you should start realizing what this is causing your body and your mind. Three effects of texting late at night are loss of sleep, lower grades, and health / physical issues.

The first effect of texting late at night is obviously loss of sleep. Many students nowadays, especially teenagers, suffer from insomnia, due to their use of phones late at night. A recent study found out that students who turned off their phones when they went to bed slept more hours than students who texted longer in the dark. In addition texting also late at night can cause sleeping disorders such as insomnia, sleep deprivation and daytime sleepiness.

A second effect of texting late at night is having low grades in school. Today students tend to go to sleep late and waking up late, and this goes against a natural rhythm, so students automatically become less efficient. A professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Xue Ming, led to study about this topic and found out that students who turned off their phone when they went to sleep or texted for less than 30 minutes before sleep had much better grades than those who stayed up late for more than 30 minutes on their phones. Also she found out that girls reported more daytime sleepiness, but they still had better grades than boys, statistically. She concluded that it is because girls tend to text before they go to sleep, and this does not normally affect their grades.

The third and last effect of texting late at night is health / physical issues. Using our cell phone screens when it is dark and we are supposed to sleep is very harmful to our health. The text alerts and the light emissions from our phones can disrupt a person's circadian rhythm, or our sleep / wake cycle, says Xue Ming. She also said that REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is the most important moment of sleep for learning, memory, and social adjustment in teenagers. If we cut our REM sleep, by going to sleep late at night and waking up early, this can affect our learning and memory. Obviously the brain is damaged by sleeping late at night, but also our body; when we lose sleep two to our cell phone use at night, the day after we have daytime sleepiness, which causes us to have a negative behavior and it decreases our cognitive abilities. This then leads to our body to always feel weak and powerless, which is not good for our health.

In conclusion, I can say that this issue is quickly rising among teenagers all over the world and an advice I could give teens about this would be to challenge yourself and set time limits at night to use your cell phone. Another useful thing is just forget about the social life you keep in your screen and think about the actual one in your life with the people you love.

  1. It´s a really nice blog, I enjoyed while I was reading. It´s full of informations. I like the part what you talked about the low grades. Because it´s the most common and obvious problem nowadays for our teens. Students cannot get up in the morning and they don´t sleep at night, they don´t have enough time to sleep, of course their grades would be effected. All of us know this but we are still doing this. And I also like the word natural rhythm that you used. Thank you for writing this blog, I really learned a lot.

  2. Today, many teenagers are usually sleep with their phone near the bed, or sleep late because they are using their phone in mid-night, and it caused them feel tired. You do a such good job, I strongly agree with you. I hope in the future, the teenagers can limit their time to using the phone, so they can feel better the next day and have good health. Thank you for publishing this blog, it's very interesting, and I enjoyed reading it!

  3. Nice blog, I like how you used actual facts to support your words. I also think that you used the memes and gifs in a nice way, which made the whole thing fun to go through. However, at some points you used some terms that might not be easily understood by some people. You could have used simpler terms, or maybe explain them a little more. :)
